Hanna Basha
Partner
Highlights
Hanna trained at Denton Wilde Sapte, moving to Schillings in September 2000 and to Carter-Ruck in February 2002. She became a partner in 2006 and, in the same year, qualified as a solicitor-advocate.
Hanna specialises in defamation, privacy and sports law. She acts for a wide range of clients including celebrities, high profile individuals, businessmen, sportsmen, football clubs, private equity companies, film companies and other corporations. As well as representing clients in court, she provides legal and practical reputation and crisis management advice when clients are faced with more extensive press scrutiny, working closely with their external and in-house public relations advisers.
Hanna has considerable success preventing publication of information about her clients, either by negotiation with newspapers or by applying to Court for an injunction, often on an emergency basis. Where information about the client is published, Hanna has secured many favourable results at trial or beforehand.
Recent work includes acting for Sports Network Limited and its CEO Frank Warren, the well-known boxing promoter, in a number of high profile libel and contractual disputes. This includes achieving a settlement of £115,000 in damages in long-running and hard fought litigation over allegations published in Ricky Hatton's autobiography. Hanna also represented Sports Network Limited in its recent contractual dispute with Joe Calzaghe.
Before becoming a partner at Carter-Ruck, Hanna was one of the first assistant solicitors to be listed in Chambers and Partners as an 'up and coming individual' and was described as having "an instinctive feel for defamation law". Shortly after becoming a partner she was short-listed in the 'Future Lawyer of the Year' category in the 'Spears Wealth Management Magazine' inaugural awards.
